BY: Sylvia Plath
I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead;
I lift my lids and all is born again.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)
The stars go waltzing out in blue and red,
And arbitrary blackness gallops in:
I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead.
I dreamed that you bewitched me into bed
And sung me moon-struck, kissed me quite insane.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)
God topples from the sky, hell’s fires fade:
Exit seraphim and Satan’s men:
I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead.
I fancied you’d return the way you said,
But I grow old and I forget your name.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)
I should have loved a thunderbird instead;
At least when spring comes they roar back again.
I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)
I’ve unilaterally decided to make this my wedding song. Potentials will be screened and eliminated on the basis of this simple, trick question: “how badly does that smiths song suck??”
(i’ve also made the decision to run my life like a game show—please don’t h8)
in an effort to get people to look
into each other’s eyes more,
and also to appease the mutes,
the government has decided
to allot each person exactly one hundred
and sixty-seven words, per day.
when the phone rings, i put it to my ear
without saying hello. in the restaurant
i point at chicken noodle soup.
i am adjusting well to the new way.
late at night, i call my long distance lover,
proudly say i only used fifty-nine today.
i saved the rest for you.
when she doesn’t respond,
i know she’s used up all her words,
so i slowly whisper i love you
thirty-two and a third times.
after that, we just sit on the line
and listen to each other breathe.
